Critical Reception
Popdust writer Andrew Unterberger stated: "'Pretend It’s OK' makes four mid-tempo ballads in the first six tracks of Little Mix’s DNA, though at least this one stays a little more interesting with its lyrics. At first glance, the song appears to be a typical breakup ballad, with the group attempting to deny the reality of the breakup. But at a closer look, with the lyrical references to "living on borrowed time," "the light that I’m chasing" and "One breath, one step, one life, one heart," it seems like the love the group lost might be because of a death rather than a breakup.
At the very least, that’s the kind of stakes Little Mix seem to be playing with here, with the song’s portentous pace and heavy-handed strings amping up the drama accordingly. It’s a little too vague to be particularly moving, and it stops just short of pure melodrama, but it’s enough to set it apart from the album’s previous ballads."[1]
